How to Eliminate Chlorine from Drinking Water?

What is Chlorine?

Chlorine is a kind of gas that has been condensed to make a liquid form. But at average room temperature, chlorine is gas.

Why is Chlorine Used In Water?

Chlorination is the most widely used way to disinfect Water from harmful microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. Chlorine is a very inexpensive and very effective disinfectant and is therefore used by municipalities worldwide.

The limit is set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which is the acceptable limit of free residual Chlorine in Water as 0.2 mg/L and the maximum permissible limit as 1.0 mg/L.

Harmful Effects of Chlorinated Water?

If you receive the tap water or municipal corporation water supply at your residence, you may have witnessed the strong odor and poor taste of the water, which is just because of Chlorine. We all know chlorine is helpful, but it is believed to have more harmful impacts apart from the strong odor and sour taste.

You will be surprised to learn that Chlorine was used as a chemical weapon in World War I. When used in high concentrations, Chlorine can kill you in some fractions of minutes.

One of the most significant stresses of using Chlorine is that it can reach naturally occurring organic and inorganic matter in our Water to form harmful disinfection by-products like Trihalomethanes (THMs) and Haloacetic Acids (HAAs), which may pose health risks.

  • Chlorinated Water smells and tastes awful
  • Chlorine in drinking water kills the harmful bacteria and kills the other bacteria found in our intestines that help in food digestion. Consuming chlorinated water may lead to digestion-related problems
  • THMs in Water may cause cancer
  • Even if you don’t consume chlorinated Water, showering with chlorine water is also dangerous, just like drinking. Our skin can absorb more Chlorine rather than when we consume it.

What is Chloramine?

Because of the growing worries regarding the harmful impacts of chlorination, many municipal corporations are shifting from Chlorine to chloramine for disinfecting Water.

Chloramine is a mixture of free Chlorine and ammonia. So mixing ammonia with chlorinated Water will give you chlorinated Water.

Unlike free Chlorine, which evaporates swiftly when it comes in contact with air, chloramines stay in the water. And because of this reason, chloramines stay in Water for a long time during distribution, and they are more effective than Chlorine.

  • Chloramines are less dangerous than Chlorine. Chloramines limit the formation of THMs, but chloramines have their harmful effects like:
  • Chloramines may result in lead leaching from water supply pipes and metal corrosion
  • Chloramines can lead to dry, itchy skin and may not be suitable for anyone with sensitive and soft skin
  • Chloramine also lead to bad smell and poor taste
  • Chloramines are complex to eliminate from Water.

Chlorine or Chloramines, How to Find?

The simplest way to know whether the tap water supplied to your home is disinfected with Chlorine or chloramines is to call your water supply provider and ask what they use to treat the municipal water supply.

Another more straightforward way of determining whether your Water has Chlorine or chloramines is by testing your tap water for ammonia. You can use an easy-to-use Ammonia test kit to check chlorine content. If the test shows the ammonia present, your Water is disinfected with chloramines.

How to Eliminate Chlorine from Water You Consume?

Activated Carbon Filter

An activated carbon (AF) filter, also termed a charcoal filter, uses small pieces of carbon to eliminate impurities and pollutants using chemical adsorption. Activated carbon utilized in these filters is coconut shells, wood, or coal. The filter eliminates poor taste and odor-causing organic compounds like Chlorine and chloramines from Water.

Suppose you are not using a water purifier. In that case, you can also buy activated carbon filters that you can directly fit on your tap, or you can buy a water filter pitcher that uses an activated carbon filter. Activated carbon filters are very effective in the fast and proper removal of Chlorine and chloramines.

RO (Reverse Osmosis)

Reverse Osmosis uses a high-quality semi-permeable membrane to remove all the ions and other particles from Water. RO membrane only passes the water through and blocks all chemical pollutants and suspended solids. RO also removes all the Chlorine and chloramines from Water. All RO water filters need pre-filtration before the Water moves from the RO membrane. And pre-activated carbon filter is usually used for pre-filtration before the RO membrane. RO purifiers are easy to use but are costly and waste some amount of water. But you need regular RO service for effective working and you can contact RO service Delhi.

Boiling creates heat and aeration, leading to volatile Chlorine’s evaporation after 20 minutes. But this method is not good for DE chlorinating a large water portion. Boiling does not remove chloramines.

This is the most straightforward way for eliminating Chlorine from Water by natural evaporation.

If you leave chlorinated Water in an enormous container, Chlorine will evaporate naturally. Nevertheless, this may take around 24 hours for the Chlorine to evaporate from the water. It is an easy method, but it takes a long time, and it does not work if the water has chloramines.

Stripping with Fresh Air

Like Off-Gassing and boiling, this way also works on the principle of evaporation. You just need an empty vessel and a vessel filled with chlorinated water. Move the chlorinated Water from one vessel to the other. And repeat it at least ten times to remove all the Chlorine from Water. The benefit of this method is it is simple and free, but it can only be used for a small quantity of water.

You have to make sure your tap water has chlorine or chloramines before you settle on which method to use to remove Chlorine from your drinking water; if the water you use has chlorine, then all the strategies will work, but if it has chloramines, you have to use the technique of activated carbon filter or Reverse Osmosis. You can take help from Aquaguard RO service Delhi.
